Straz Center: New Decade, New Shows

By Kennedy Haugen

The Straz Center for Performing Arts has announced the Broadway shows coming to Tampa for the 2020 to 2021 show season. There is a good mix of beloved Broadway classics and brand new titles for theatergoers to enjoy. Here are some of the biggest titles making their way to the Tampa Bay area.

To Kill A Mockingbird – Oct. 6-11, 2020
Based on the classic book of the same title, Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird is brought to life on stage. Inspired by Lee’s childhood in Alabama, the play features the same towering symbols of integrity and righteousness through the character of Atticus Finch as its literary counterpart. Alongside Atticus, the character of his daughter, Scout defines youthful innocence and its inevitable loss. The story of To Kill A Mockingbird has been touching people for generations.

Hadestown – Dec. 1-6, 2020
Hadestown is the winner of eight 2019 Tony Awards, including best musical, and mixes together two mythic tales. It tells the tale of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone. Critics say that Hadestown is a haunting and hopeful theatrical experience that grabs you and never lets go.

Wicked – Jan. 13-31, 2021
Wicked, one of the biggest Broadway sensations, takes you on a trip to the Land of Oz, telling the story of a time before Dorothy arrived and following the story of Elphaba and Glinda two young witches with far different backgrounds. Wicked takes a look into a friendship before the world decided to call one “good” and the other “wicked.”

Dear Evan Hanson – March 23-28, 2021
Dear Evan Hanson is another multiple Tony Award-winning musical, that includes the best musical. Dear Evan Hanson tells the story of a teenage boy who just wanted to fit in and gets that chance through a letter that wasn’t meant to be seen and a lie that he never meant to tell. The contemporary musical is about life and the way we live it.

Cats – April 27-May 2, 2021
Cats is another classic Broadway show, brought back to popular culture through the movie that was released last year. Cats is a show that is better suited for a stage performance, since it was originally written for the theatre. It tells the story of Jellicle cats that come together once a year under the Jellicle moon to choose which of them will be taken into a new Jellicle life and move onto the Heaviside Layer. It features some of the most treasured songs in musical theatre.

Hamilton – June 1-27, 2021
The revolutionary, hip-hop musical Hamilton is coming back to Tampa for another round. Years after Hamilton’s Broadway debut it is still one of the hottest tickets both in New York and on its national tour. Hamilton tells the story of Alexander Hamilton, from his move to America, to help other politicians create the constitution, meeting his wife, an affair and even his inevitable demise.

All tickets will become available closer to the show dates and can be found at strazcenter.org.
