When the Future Becomes The Present

We’re not sure about you, but one of our editors in particular wore her clothes inside out yesterday to commemorate the arrival of Marty McFly and Dr. Emmett Brown to Oct. 21, 2015. Obviously, things didn’t exactly pan out in the way the film predicted. We mourn the absence of hover boards, and self-drying clothes that are designed to fit the wearer just right. We stand over our slowly-cooking ramen in angst that it’s not an instant-bake pizza.

In spite of today’s shortcomings, we should all be glad that there are no flying cars. Have you been on a Florida highway? There is no way that would have been a good idea. Every time we watch the film, we cling to our thumbs, fearing that they might be cut off to gain access to our valuables at the shady Lyons Estates. We should be thankful that we don’t have cheaply made self-tying shoes, that could possibly strangle our feet cutting off our precious circulation. We definitely dress better in the real 2015. Which production designer seriously thought those “futuristic” outfits were a good idea? Sorry, but there’s no way we’d be wearing those ridiculous hats. Also, we get annoyed when the elevator talks to us, so we’re pretty sure that the house greeting us when we walk through the front door would drive us up the wall.

What we do have is a Jaws 19 trailer that tickles our funny bone. We don’t know about you, but we’d be pretty flustered if hologram film trailers tried to bite us as we approach the theater. We have a $20 Pepsi Perfect product that looks cool and fills us with nostalgia, but we doubt any college student will have $20 to spare on a product that gets served with every meal on campus. Skype and FaceTime give us the ability to video chat, but we wouldn’t consider them in common usage. Snapchat might as well be the modern day equivalent. The computerized waiters at Lou’s Cafe are eerily familiar to anyone who has been inside a Chili’s recently, with tiny kiosks that might one day render human servers obsolete altogether.

As for the Chicago Cubs winning the World Series, that has yet to be determined. The Cubbies have been mired in a postseason slump for years and are hoping to reverse that trend against the New York Mets in the National League Championship Series. Though by the time this article reaches the stands they may already be out.

The true excellence of Back to The Future is that it truly stands the test of time by still being relevant today. Whether things panned out the way they thought it would doesn’t matter nearly as much as the fun we have watching the film back 30 years later.
