BREAKING: A construction crane hooked onto the Kennedy drawbridge as workers were trying to transport the crane across the Hillsborough River causing it to topple into the river. While the barge carrying the crane was passing through the river, the crane’s cable snagged on the teeth to the drawbridge causing it to fall into the river. According to spectators on scene in Curtis Hixon Park, the incident occurred sometime this morning between 8 and 8:30am. The original barge has been submerged underneath the the crane and a larger barge has been brought in to help support the effort to remove the crane.
No injuries have been reported but the bridge has been closed to all traffic for an undetermined amount of time. Traffic to Kennedy Blvd is temporarily being diverted through Cass Street.
Updates to come.
