UT Alumna killed at World Cup

TAMPA – A former University of Tampa soccer player was involved in a fatal car accident while attending the World Cup in South Africa. Nicole Murphy, 24, was walking with her brother Tuesday when an accused drunken driver hit them.

TAMPA – A former University of Tampa soccer player was involved in a fatal car accident while attending the World Cup in South Africa.

Nicole Murphy, 24, was walking with her brother Tuesday when an accused drunken driver hit them.Murphy did not survive the impact, but her brother survived and was left in critical condition.

Murphy, who was a member of UT’s 2007 Division II National Championship team and number seven on her team, was remembered for her perseverance and hard work as a defender.

According to UT coach Gerry Lucey said, “She had the energy to go the full 90 minutes.”

Murphy graduated from UT in 2008 and went on to Louisiana State University to study medicine.
