Suspect in UT Rape Sought

Although the rape of a USF student during Gasparilla was reported in local and national news, the dorm room rape of a University of Tampa student that same day received so little attention that the UT spokesman and other campus officials said they knew nothing about it.

Although the rape of a USF student during Gasparilla was reported in local and national news, the dorm room rape of a University of Tampa student that same day received so little attention that the UT spokesman and other campus officials said they knew nothing about it.
The rape was reported after the Gasparilla parade Saturday, Jan. 27, when the intoxicated victim accepted the suspect’s assistance back to her dorm, Tampa Police Officer Lisa Parashis said.’
‘We’re still aggressively investigating this case, and we’re processing the evidence obtained from the victim’s room,’ she said. ‘Hopefully as we interview more people, this will provide leads into this case.’
Director of Campus Safety and Security Charles Mascenik said he doesn’t think the suspect is a UT student.
‘It wasn’t a stranger sneaking in the room,’ he said. ‘We’re almost positive it is not a student, but you never know.’
When the victim’s roommate found the woman and the suspect in the shower, he reportedly grabbed his clothes and ran out of the room, Parashis said.
The victim tested positive when she underwent a sexual battery test, meaning sexual intercourse was performed.
While TPD is investigating the crime as a sexual battery, which includes rape, Dean of Students Bob Ruday said he did not believe the university recognizes the event as rape because the student ‘freely allowed’ the man to come up to her room.
‘When students become intoxicated, have difficulty remembering events and bring strangers back to their rooms, things can get out of hand,’ Ruday said.
The incident was not reported in the campus security log as it was ‘still under investigation,’ Ruday said.
‘The victim does not remember what the suspect looked like and only remembers experiencing a lot of pain,’ Parashis said.’
The victim and her dorm were not identified, but the Tampa Police Department posted a bulletin on campus describing the man as 21years old, six-feet, one-inch in height and 200 pounds.’
He had a brown goatee that was six inches below his chin line (no mustache). He was seen in the picture entering a dorm with what appears to be a woman (only an arm is shown).
The suspect wore a T-shirt, a blue ‘Nuggets’ baseball cap, dark-brown camouflage pants and skateboard shoes. The flyer said he appeared to be a skateboarder.’
The bulletin, which was only seen posted once in Vaughn and once in ResCom, contained three pictures of the suspect from on-campus cameras. It is unclear whether the suspect is a UT student, and he is yet to be located or identified.’
Several RAs and Head Residents said they had not heard of the incident.
University spokesman Grant Donaldson said he knew only of the nationally publicized daylight rape of a USF pre-med student behind a Hyde Park building during Gasparilla. The woman had parked at UT.
Her story made national headlines because she was arrested after she reported the rape because she owed restitution. Her mother and attorney claim the debt and the warrants were a clerical error.’
If anyone recognizes the suspect, knows his whereabouts or has additional information connected with the incident, contact Tampa Police Department Detective E.’ Wilkinson at (813)276-3637 or Detective M. Sutkoff at (813)276-3542.
