Playing quality conference opponents at the beginning of the season is a good test of where a team stands. On Saturday, the University of Tampa women's basketball team (3-3, 0-1 SCC) failed their first test against Rollins College (5-2 1-0 SSC). In a rematch of last year's Sunshine State Conference Championship game, Rollins defeated UT 55-43 in front of 153 fans inside of the Martinez Center.

Ask any University of Tampa basketball fan about the team, and they will talk about the versatility of Chris Evans, the hard-nosed play of Jeremy Black or maybe the athleticism that Johnathan Ball brings to the team. Rarely will the name Chris King come up in the conversation, but that looks like it is about to change.

Opening the season with a 3-2 record was not the way the University of Tampa women's basketball team wanted to start out. Despite a tough overtime loss to Georgia State and College in the second game, the Spartans have not played like the team that was picked to finish second in the Sunshine State Conference before the start of the season.

When Tampa volleyball coach Chris Catanach took over the program in 1984, UT was a fairly unknown school when it came to volleyball. In his 23 years with the team, Catanach has transformed the University of Tampa into one of the top Division II volleyball programs in the country.

After breezing through the regular season with just one loss, UT advanced to the Final Four for the second consecutive season. Tampa faced Minnesota-Duluth on Friday with a spot in the NCAA Division II volleyball finals on the line.

The Grand Valley State women's soccer team is known for their relentless offense attack. The Lakers have averaged just over four goals a game this season; but it was GVSU's defense that was dominant on Thursday as the Lakers defeated UT 2-0 in the NCAA division II soccer semifinals.

With victories over Wingate, Barry and Florida Gulf Coast University, the first-ranked University of Tampa volleyball team won the South Regional tournament and advanced to the Elite Eight in Pensacola. UT will face Dowling (N.Y.) on Thursday, Nov. 16.

Sophomore Danielle MacDonald has been vital to the success of the Spartans volleyball team this season after transferring from Florida State. MacDonald has become the go-to player for UT in the playoffs despite an average regular season. In the Spartans' win over Florida Gulf Coast University, MacDonald recorded 28 kills and hit .

Sergio Perez really loves the University of Tampa. Why else would Perez, who was drafted as the 67th overall pick in the Major League Baseball draft last year, come back to UT this fall to work on getting his degree? Perez left UT after his junior year to pursue his dream of playing in the MLB.
