On Saturday, Sept. 16, Tampa volleyball coach Chris Catanach reached another historic milestone with a win over Eckerd College. Catanach joined the group of 14 coaches in NCAA volleyball history to win 700 matches. He became just the fourth coach in Division II to reach 700 victories.

Coming into the season, the UT volleyball team had a few questions surrounding them. Could the team still contend after losing their best player and All-American, Ericka Womack? The 2006 University of Tampa baseball team was loaded with talent from top to bottom. The team won a school record 54 games. Five players were selected in the major league draft, Lee Cruz was named the Division II player of the year, Sergio Perez hurled a no hitter against Barry University; and Roberto Mena became the first Spartan to hit for the cycle.

The UT men's soccer team is less than two weeks into the season but they have already showed drastic improvement from last year. After a somewhat disappointing 7-7-3 record last season, the team has won three of its first four games this season. These wins included a 5-2 victory over the eighth-ranked Clayton State Lakers.

The 2006 volleyball season is underway and once again the University of Tampa women are among the top Division II teams in the nation. The Spartans are ranked second in the nation after advancing to the National Final Four last season. Seniors Tarah Marinelli and Stephanie Rivera look to lead an experienced team to its first National Championship.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- When you're part of Tampa baseball, it all adds up. First plus first equals fourth. Chris Rosenbaum's pinch-hit RBI single in the 10th inning, his first appearance of the 2006 national championship, broke a 2-2 tie. All-American pitcher Sergio Perez retired three of the four batters he faced in his first relief appearance this season for his first save.

From dramatic wins and losses, to conference championships, to come from behind wins, the 2005-2006 season has had everything you could ask for. The women's volleyball team dominated the court during the fall, finishing the season with a 29-4 record before falling to Grand Valley State in the National semi-finals.

When I sat down to write a summary of this week's baseball games against Nova Southeastern, I realized a few things. There was a total of maybe 30 UT students that attended one of the three games this weekend, and of those 30 students, I doubt that any of them want to read a recap of what they just saw.

After sweeping a three game series from the Nova Southeastern Knights (23-18, 6-9) the University of Tampa baseball team improved its record to 35-5 and 14-1 in the conference. The Spartans continue to hold onto the number one ranking in the nation with just 12 games left in the regular season.

Brian Knotts is a sophomore from Fayetteville, North Carolina. He has been a member of the Army ROTC program for two years and recently joined the Theta Chi Fraternity. Knotts played baseball, soccer, and football during high school but he focused mainly on football.

The UT baseball team had high expectations coming into the season. With a starting lineup comprised of five juniors and three seniors it seemed like the team's experience would be a major factor in their success. But it has been the play of freshmen first baseman Jose Jimenez that has surprised fans.
