Baseball Left Behind Although the baseball team won the three game series against Saint Leo University 2-1 they dropped six spots to fall to No.19 in the latest national poll. Gliding to Tennessee At the Florida Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships, the Lightweight Four team finished in third place, earning them a spot in the Dad Vail Regatta. ' Alumnus Reflects On April 19, 2009 the baseball nation lost a beloved announcer. Harry Kalas collapsed and died at age 73."

Grounds for Removal The newly renovated Pepin Stadium soccer field recently saw some new maintenance as grounds crews tore up sections of the field to replace with new grass. Unlucky Strokes Kris Shane and Kyle Roy led the UT golf team to a 12th place finish out of 14 teams in the Buccaneer Invitational. Swinging for First The baseball team will take on conference opponent Saint Leo University Friday. UT previously beat the Lions 9-2. '

As the softball team sits comfortably on top of the conference standings, they have only three opponents left to battle in the regular season. The Spartans are doing their best to keep a positive attitude and continue their hard work. 'The energy level is definitely high in the dugout,' freshman Becky Vyzas said. Vyzas, a freshman catcher and Tampa native, is contributing to the Spartan's winning ways. She hit the walk-off double to score teammate Michelle Horan and win the game 1-0 for the Spartans in the 15-inning battle against Florida Tech at the end of March."

Golf Goes South After competing in the North Alabama Spring Classic, the UT golf team finished in 15th place out of 23 teams. Beach Volleyball The Spartans placed second in the second annual Sunshine State Collegiate Beach Volleyball Tournament held in Clearwater last weekend."

From start to finish, Jerome Fulton oversees the entire progression of all' home games. As facilities director at the University of Tampa, Fulton makes sure that everything surrounding the games runs smoothly, even if he has to step out from behind the scenes and help out first hand. 'I went to play the national anthem once at a game here, and for some reason it did not play,' Fulton explained, 'so I sang the national anthem.'"

Blame it on the... Rain was the reason for unplayable fielding conditions' at the Lynn University softball field last weekend in Boca Raton, Fla., causing the softball games to be cancelled. All-South Selection Hailee Sullivan became the first member of the University of Tampa basketball team to earn a spot on the NCAA South Regional All-Tournament team. Rowdies Reach Out In 2010, Tampa Bay will be home to another professional sports team. The Tampa Bay Rowdies will be a United Soccer League First Division team."

After dropping the first 10 matches of the season, the current streak for the University of Tampa tennis team looks much better at seven wins. The season is finally starting to go their way. 'We play our hardest teams first,' explained freshman Victoria Bell. 'For some reason, it's set up like that and we have a really tough schedule at first.'"

Strong pitching and defense for the University of Tampa women's softball team can be noted for their current 19-5 record. Their bats have also given them comfortable leads and wins. UT currently sits atop of the Sunshine State Conference, winning six of their seven conference matchups so far."

PGA Stop in Tampa The Transition Golf Championship to be held at the Copperhead Course at the Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club is offering a discount for college students to attend the tournament. SSC Slugger Jared Simon batted his way to an SSC Player of the Week honor this past week. Athlete Elite Rashad Callaway's success throughout the season earned him a spot on the Daktronics Men's Basketball All-South Region Team as well as the NABC All-Region Team.

Bracket Beaters The Minaret will be hosting a bracket for the ensuing March Madness college basketball tournament. Softball's SSC Star Softball opened up their season 3-2 at the Eckerd Tournament hosted in Clearwater. The lady Spartans beat two SSC conference opponents, Florida Tech and Saint Leo, but the games will not count as conference wins due to tournament play. Fan Poll Fun Vote Tucked away in the bottom right corner of the athletic web site is a survey. The current question is 'How many national championships will UT win in 2008-09?'"

The University of Tampa men's and women's swim teams have put together a year of performances worthy of making it to the NCAA championships. The men and women will represent UT in Houston, Texas, on March 11-14. 'Our goal every year is to finish as high as we can in NCAA's, and you have to qualify, of course, to get there,' said head coach Ed Brennan. 'The goal of the coaches is to qualify with as little emotional expenditure as possible because that emotion is what you need when you get to the major competition.'"

What started off as a slow, end-of-weekend series for the University of Tampa men's baseball team turned into an exciting three-game sweep of the Georgia College and State University Bobcats.
