12 UT speech students will bring their witty final project acts to Reeves Theater- “The O.C. Oral Confessions: A night of Crude Language and Provocative Literature.”

UT’s Assistant Professor of Speech Christopher Gurrie teaches the students of Speech 205 Oral Interpretation of Literature.

“In this class [we] learn different techniques of literature and theater, and how to interpret the literature; making it either funny, sarcastic or sad,” said Heather Gromley, one of Gurrie’s students.

The students are required to perform interpretations to literature pieces of their choice for the class final project. Their performances are broken down into two segments.

The first half illustrates the theme “Letters to the Editors.” The students chose letters from any newspapers, magazines or web sites to interpret and act out in accordance to how they feel they should be displayed.

“I chose a ‘Dear Abby’ piece to perform that I got from an online article,” said Gromley.

For the second half, the class selected their own piece of literature – a play, book, etc. – to interpret and perform how they think it is meant to be. According to Gromley, the majority of all the pieces that the class will perform are humorous, and relate in some way to the life of a college student.

The acts kick off Nov. 20 at 8:00 p.m., and there will be an intermission between the first and second segments. The Reeves Theater doors will be open to all for this free-of-charge event.
