Michael Bethel was arrested on Feb. 18 and charged with four felonies: two counts of third-degree grand theft and two counts of second-degree burglary. His bond, set at $19,000, was met a day later.
According to police reports Bethel was initially questioned by authorities on Feb. 17. At this time he denied knowing anything about the burglaries, but later recanted his story and confessed to the crime.
Additionally, Nolan Cancino, freshman at Florida Southern College, was also involved and charged the same as Bethel.
According to police reports Bethel and Cancino, along with an unidentified third-suspect, wandered around Straz Hall looking for unlocked dormitory rooms. On Feb. 13 Bethel and Cancino, and the third suspect, walked into several unlocked rooms where they removed two Macbook computers, an Ipod Nano and a Playstation 3 gaming console.
According to police reports there were three victims in total.
Bethel, a sophomore and former men’s soccer player, has since been suspended from school and removed from the soccer team.
His charges were: two-counts of burglary of an unoccupied dwelling, a second-degree felony and two-counts of grand theft ($300-$5,000 ), a third-degree felony.
Head coach Adrian Bush declined to comment, reiterating that it was an ongoing investigation between Bethel and his attorney.
Bethel came to Tampa from Nassau, Bahamas and had played in a total of 38 games as a Spartan in his first two seasons. He tallied four goals and five assists.
Cancino is also from Nassau, Bahamas.
