During the 2009-2010 school year at the University of Tampa, it has been hard to go places on campus, such as the scenic Plant Park, and not notice Cass St. Bridge standing straight up, clearly not in use.
According to Director of the City of Tampa’s Media Affairs, David Vaughn, the Cass St. Bridge has been closed since August for renovation. It was finally reopened for through traffic at 5 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 21.
Many students and Tampa civilians have inquired as to why the bridge has been closed for five months.
“This was a $1.7 million contract. It was more than doing a little bit of painting. It was a significant amount of work,” said Vaughn.
In order to complete renovations, workers had to repair, paint and replace the steel and refurbish all of the gear that raises and lowers the bridge.
The bridge is not completely finished with renovations.
A few more minimal changes need to be completed, but David Vaughn assures the Tampa community that all this work will be done with the bridge open to through traffic.
