The University of Tampa alumni Chris Mitchell has begun his campaign for the 2010 State House District 57 primary.
The Florida native urges, Florida has a “huge disconnect between [state] representatives and the middle class” that needs to be addressed by an elected official.
Mitchell graduated from UT in 2007 with a sports management degree.
During an interview with the Minaret, he said it was during his time at UT that he first gained the confidence to lead.
Since graduating, he has worked in the private sector of business.
He has owned a consulting firm and has been the chief operating officer at another local business.
According to Mitchell, his campaign plan is simple: be as accessible as possible to voters.
There are two ways to be put on the primary ballet: pay the fee or petition.
Mitchell is currently out talking to voters and petitioning for 1,200 names by the end of Feb. to make the ballot.
Mitchell hosts an online show where local voters can call or e-mail questions about local policies.
Once elected, Mitchell plans to continue the show and be as in-touch with the local public as possible.
His major concern is education reform in Florida’s public schools.
He commented that Florida is ranked number 48 in the public schools union and that this needs to change.
“You look around and don’t see anyone fighting for your interests,” Mitchell said.
