For His Senior Recital, Joel Fenelon Becomes One With His Tuba

Posted April 21 2008 at 12:00 am

The past four years have led up to Wednesday, April 2 when Joel Fenelon will give his all in front of his peers, the faculty, and his girlfriend, Mary.

Fenelon, a Tuba Music Performance Major, will perform his Senior Recital in The Grand Salon at 7:30 p.m.

His performance, is entitled “Tuba Becomes One with Man.” This 1-hour long performance will include 5 pieces displaying his powerful dedication to the past 4 years here at UT.

Originally written for the French horn, he will perform the 19-minute movements on his trusty tuba. One of these pieces has proven to be challenging and inspiring. “If you can play Mozart, you can play anything,” Fenelon says.

“Seven hours a day I’m in the practice room. I skipped out on Spring Break to prepare for this. I don’t just practice the tuba – I listen to music, I diet, I walk, I rid my life of stress. I am in complete control of whatever happens Wednesday night and whatever I am going to be,” Fenelon said when asked about how he is preparing for his performance.

He says without the UT Music Department, he would not be the same. Dr. Jeffrey Traster, Chair of the Music Dept. was the reason why Joel came to this university and Dr. Grigorios Zamparas is why he has stayed. These two are his discipline, his dedication, and his inspiration to do what he does – become one with his tuba.

As he takes his final bow as a UT student performer, The Grand Salon will never be the same. Good luck to him and hope to see you all there – 7:30 p.m. Grand Salon!
