Twins Lead Lady Spartans

It is rare to find siblings that are talented enough to play with each other on a top Division II college team. It is even less common when the siblings are identical twins. But to have three sets of identical twins competing in college athletics at one university is impossible, right?

No, in fact, they were all part of the same recruiting class. The third-ranked UT women’s soccer team was able to strike gold in 2004, landing four top prospects, which consisted of two sets of identical twins Marissa and Maria Mohammed and Brittney and Courtney Evans.

What makes their story even more remarkable is that all four players made an immediate impact on the field in their freshmen season.

Last season, Brittney Evans and Maria Mohammed were named Second Team All-SSC. Courtney Evans and Marissa Mohammed had solid seasons for UT, starting 18 games and 13 games respectively.

This season has been a little tougher on the twins. Brittney Evans is out of action for an extended period after suffering an injury.

“It’s tough seeing my sister sitting on the bench,” said Courtney Evans. “She is a big part of the team, and it’s hard watching her not being able to play.”

Although the twins have gone through some tough times both on and off the field, they think having a sister on the team has helped in their first two years at UT.

“It has helped with the transition to college,” said Courtney Evans, “We room together and are really close.”

Marissa Mohammed always knew that she and her sister Maria would end up going to the same school. “It was easy for us. We looked at schools together and decided we would go to the same college. We are a lot closer than most twins,” said Mohammed.

The team looks forward to the rest of the season as they try to accomplish their goal of winning a national championship.

“We have not played as well as we could have,” said Courtney Evans. “But we are peaking at the right time. We have had a lot of injuries, but we still have high expectations for the rest of the season.”

“We have the skill to win it all,” said Maria Mohammed. “We just have to keep playing well. We can definitely make it to the Final Four.”

Gabriela and Camila Saade are also identical twins but play on the volleyball team.
