I hadn't planned on seeing "The Departed." I am not much of a mafia/gangster movie kind-of-girl. However, what girl would pass up the chance to eat popcorn and watch Leonard DiCaprio, Matt Damon and Mark Wahlberg run around together? "The Departed," directed by Martin Scorsese, is a twisted cop thriller that revolves around two new cops, Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio), an undercover agent inside the Irish Mafia, and Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon), a mole for the Irish Mafia, inside the police department.
On Oct. 20 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., I had the opportunity to see UT's fine arts faculty display their magnificent works. I arrived at the Scarfone/Hartley Gallery in the Bailey Arts Studio about 7:00 p.m, just in time for the gallery's opening. As I began to look at the art works, right away one of them caught my eye.
The women's cross-country team had a disappointing weekend, but it could have been a lot worse. They came in to the SSC Championship with a legitimate chance to finish first. Unfortunately, the team had a pair of runners who were given medical attention for dehydration.
The University of Tampa men's soccer team defeated Eckerd College 4-2 on Homecoming night. The game drew one of the largest crowds in recent history, as 758 fans packed Pepin/Rood Stadium. The marketing team did a great job of coordinating the event.
The Lady Spartans defeated the Eckerd College Tritons in dominating fashion with an 8-0 victory. It was a night in which seniors were recognized, records were made and the student body created the loudest atmosphere at UT this season. Prior to the game, Seniors Laurenleigh Guagliardo, Samantha Robinson, Kara Rasmussen, Malana Winskas and Sarah Sheehan were recognized for their achievements at UT.
National baseball champions, a powerhouse volleyball program, two competitive soccer teams and tons of intramural sports to go around. What do all of these sports have in common? They are widely known and supported by many of the students here at UT. What many don't know is that UT has a hidden gem in their sack: the men's crew team is building a legacy as one of the best teams in all of Florida while also gaining respect on a national level.
History will be made Oct. 27-28 at the St. Pete Times Forum when it hosts a four-team NCAA Division I tournament, The Lightning College Hockey Classic. The Women's Cross Country team has quietly climbed the ranks to become one of the elite teams in the nation, currently ranked 12th. The program has gained strength each year with head coach Jarrett Slaven running the show. Since his arrival at UT he has led the Spartans to their first NCAA Divison II South Regional title in 2004, three consecutive SSC titles and produced the SSC's Runner of the Year for three seasons in a row.
