World Cup 2006 began with an onslaught of yellow and red cards being issued and ended with the world seeing red as French striker Zinedine Zidane was sent off in extra time for his vicious head butt on Italian defender Marco Materazzi. It was prompted by what Zidane called, "an attack on his mother and sister" and it helped put the nail in the coffin on France's chances of winning the final match.

The 2006 University of Tampa baseball team was loaded with talent from top to bottom. The team won a school record 54 games; five players were selected in the major league draft, Lee Cruz was named the Division II player of the year, Sergio Perez hurled a no hitter against Barry University, and Roberto Mena became the first Spartan to hit for the cycle.

The 2006 volleyball season is underway and once again the University of Tampa women are among the top Division II teams in the nation. The Spartans are ranked second in the nation after advancing to the National Final Four last season. Seniors Tarah Marinelli and Stephanie Rivera look to lead an experienced team to its first National Championship.

The men's soccer team kicked off the 2006 season with a strong 5-2 win over the No. 8 Clayton State Lakers. Tampa overmatched and out-hustled their opponent in a game they controlled from start to finish. The star of the game was forward Ricardo Cardoso, who delivered an unbelievable performance with an incredible four goals on the night.

As a precautionary measure, The University of Tampa has cancelled afternoon and evening classes and suspended campus operations except for essential services, beginning at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 30, to avoid disruption resulting from possible high winds and heavy rain.
