Students living in Vaughn, Austin, and Brevard Halls complained of the booming loud music and crowd noise emanating from the Florida Caribbean Student Association’s conference, which occurred in the Vaughn Courtyard during the weekend of April 1. While the noise and activity disturbed some students, The Minaret is impressed with the turnout and enthusiasm that students involved had for the event. We commend the Caribbean Student Association for celebrating their national pride, while at the same time proving that there is such a thing as school spirit at UT.
Student apathy is a source of much frustration for the leaders of organizations and planners of events on campus. It is a subject that is often mentioned every year during Student Government election time when candidates discuss issues they would like to address if elected. Yet, apathy and low attendance at various events continues to be a problem year after year. Perhaps the apathy problem is not the fault of organizations and campus leaders. Perhaps the solution to the apathy problem rests in the hands of students.
The Caribbean Student Association’s event last weekend should serve as a message to students that if they are not at all involved on campus, they need to become involved. This means not only going to events, but becoming a member of organizations as well, whether it is a club, Greek organization, sports team, or something else.
Students in the very least should be enjoying events such as Student Productions’ movie nights, and their NCAA Championship game showing which drew a large crowd in Vaughn on Monday.
A show of thanks is much deserved to all organizations and student groups that do offer up regular events and other ways to participate. Even with all of its faults, UT is a great school and it is the responsibility of students to take pride in their school by fully taking advantage of what it has to offer.
